In 1964, the world's first heart transplant was performed at the University of Mississippi Medical Center by Dr. James Hardy. Today, University of Mississippi Medical Center continues to make news by offering the state's only heart transplant program.
Nationally recognized cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons work with a specially trained team to give patients with failing hearts a second chance at life. The team includes the only physician in Mississippi who has been trained and certified in advanced heart failure and transplant/cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Pre- and post-transplant medical management are available through a special clinic at University Physicians Pavilion. In addition to clinic services, a support group meets each month.
For those in advanced heart failure, clinic care is overseen by a top-notch cardiologist. The specially trained staff also participates with support group services twice a month.
